So Yesterday, by Scott Westerfeld, is about a boy named Hunter Braque whose job, as strange as it sounds, is a trendsetter. What that is, is he goes around looking for new trends and also reviews new products and commercials to see if people will buy the product. He becomes friends with a girl names Jen James while taking a picture of her shoelaces (she is an innovator the type of person Hunter is always looking for.) She comes along with hem to a meeting for his job and her input causes her to be of sudden interest to Hunters boss Mandy, who invites them to another meeting the next day for a "secret product." They go to the meeting place and Mandy doesn't show but after calling her phone several times they hear it in an abandoned building they are standing outside of and decide to break in. There, they find the "secret product" and Mandy's phone but are soon chased out by an angry bald man which leads them to think that there is more to Mandy's disappearance then they thought. They are soon running all over New York City trying to find more clues to why Mandy is being held and more importantly where. Brainwash causing movies, skin dying shampoo, and even a fake magazine for rich people are thrown into the obstacle course that finding Mandy becomes. Soon the clues, and phone calls from the kidnappers indicate that Mandy is being held at an old movie set, but once they get there they realize its not what they thought.
One of the themes of this book would be loyalty. I picked this because no matter what happens they never stop trying to find Mandy. They get chased, are discouraged by their parents to freak out about it, and even the police won't do anything. Another theme might be coming of age because Hunter not only changes in the sense that he over comes his fears but he also gets a girlfriend (Jen) and changes his look. These are two themes and examples from the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery's but also anyone who likes to learn new things about fashion. One of the things I liked about the book is whenever the author had to mention famous brand he wouldn't come right out and say the name. He would give clues to the name which I though was pretty cool and fun to guess. A few times it was pretty easy to guess what happened next but most of the time the author kept it suspenseful and wouldn't let you put the book down. This was a great read for anyone who likes a bit of mystery and fashion and love.
